Ever since its creation in 1800 the Prefecture de Police has played a central part in the life of the city by safeguarding its people and properties. As an institution at the service of each and every member of the public, it has several areas of jurisdiction under the authority of both the mayor and the préfets (chiefs of police and local government agencies) in the other départements, and also encompasses the police and public security services made available by the French Ministry of the Interior
